Kelvin Benjamin – The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) has congratulated President-elect Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, stressing the importance of good governance and respect for human life.
MCCB President, Right Reverend Martin Anwel Mtumbuka, praised the Southern African nation’s smooth transition of power following the September 16 elections.
“The MCCB commends outgoing President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for prioritising Malawi’s interests by graciously conceding defeat and congratulating the President-elect. This noble gesture reaffirms Malawi’s enduring democratic character,” he said, urging citizens to work for the common good despite political differences.
Mutharika, 85, was declared the winner with 57% of the vote. Having previously led the country from 2014 to 2020, he now faces urgent challenges, including corruption, unemployment and a struggling economy.
The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Malawi also appealed for peace, unity and acceptance of the results, stressing that “true victory lies in a peaceful Malawi.”
Meanwhile, Chisankho Watch, a Catholic-affiliated independent election observer unit, endorsed the credibility of the polls.
“Our estimates closely match those for the top two presidential candidates in the 2025 General Elections, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6%. These results confirm the integrity of the vote and reflect the will of Malawians,” the group said.
