Pope Leo XIV has spoken by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians in the besieged Ukrainian city of Oleshky and enable their safe evacuation.

The Holy See Press Office announced the conversation on Friday afternoon, 16 October, saying the Pope expressed deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city, located in Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson region.

“During the conversation, the Holy Father expressed his deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and called for a ceasefire to allow the delivery of food and medical assistance, and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population,” the statement said.

The Vatican added that Pope Leo reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace.

Speaking later on the sidelines of a conference at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the Pope had personally initiated the call to plead for civilians trapped in the city.

“It was the Holy Father who took the initiative to plead the case of this besieged city, where some 2,000 civilians need humanitarian routes through which they can leave,” Cardinal Parolin said.

He explained that the Pope had called for a ceasefire to allow food and other humanitarian assistance to reach the city and enable civilians wishing to leave to be evacuated.

“I hope that, in response to the Holy Father’s request, President Putin will agree to do what the Pope has asked,” the cardinal added.

He also expressed hope that Putin’s acceptance of the telephone call could be a positive sign.

“The fact that he accepted the call and spoke with the Pope may, I hope, be a sign that the Pope’s request will indeed be carried out,” Cardinal Parolin said.

The conversation was the second telephone call between Pope Leo XIV and the Russian president. They previously spoke on 4 June 2025.

Oleshky lies on the Dnieper River in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region, near the frontline of the war.

The call came as Pope Leo was receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he had been admitted on Tuesday and underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, according to the information provided.

Letter to the Philippians 3,17-21.4,1.

Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers... and sisters, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us.
For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ.
Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their "shame." Their minds are occupied with earthly things.
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.
Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, beloved.

Psalms 122(121),1-2.3-4a.4b-5.

I rejoiced because they said to me,
"We... will go up to the house of the LORD."
And now we have set foot
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, built as a city
with compact unity.
To it the tribes go up,
To it the tribes go up,

the tribes of the LORD.
In it are set up judgment seats,
seats for the house of David.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 16,1-8.

Jesus said to his disciples, "A rich... man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property.
He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.'
The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg.
I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.'
He called in his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?'
He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.'
Then to another he said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.'
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. "For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light."
