The Holy See Press Office announced his planned discharge on Saturday morning, following a medical assessment that confirmed he was fit to leave hospital.
In a statement, the Pope’s doctors, Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, said morning blood tests and a chest X-ray had confirmed that his clinical condition allowed him to be discharged.
Before returning to the Vatican, Pope Leo celebrated Mass in a room set aside for that purpose on the hospital’s 10th floor.
The Holy See Press Office also announced that the Pope would lead the noonday Angelus prayer on Sunday from the window of the Apostolic Palace, marking his return to the Vatican after his hospital stay.
