ArruThe Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr Arturo Sosa, SJ, visited the Arrupe Jesuit Institute (AJI) in Accra on October 13, 2026, for a briefing on the Institute’s mission, programmes and strategic priorities.
In a presentation led by AJI Director Fr Bernard Jado, SJ, and Head of Programme, Miss Gifty Appea, outlined the Institute’s development, achievements and plans for expanding its impact in Ghana and beyond.
Established in November 2018 as an initiative of the Society of Jesus’ North-West Africa Province, AJI was conceived as a platform for research, formation and social action. The Institute seeks to address challenges facing Ghanaian and African societies through research and solutions informed by Catholic Social Teaching.

During the briefing, the Institute highlighted its work in migration research, integral ecology, youth formation and public engagement. Its initiatives include Faith in the Public Sphere, which creates opportunities for dialogue on Christian witness and the common good, and environmental policy dialogues undertaken with the Catholic Youth Network for Environmental Sustainability in Africa (CYNESA-Ghana).
The presentation also outlined AJI’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, which places greater emphasis on advocacy and youth empowerment. The Institute intends to strengthen its engagement with issues including human rights, child protection, education and environmental protection, while expanding opportunities for youth leadership, ethical formation and livelihoods development.

The briefing further identified funding, staffing and institutional capacity as priorities for sustaining programmes and extending their reach. AJI is seeking to strengthen partnerships, diversify funding and improve its systems to support the implementation of its strategic plan.
For his part, the Superior General appreciated the work of the Institute and encouraged its leadership to work towards financial sustainability to ensure the continuity of its programmes and the long-term fulfilment of its mission.
