Nuncio urges Caritas Ghana to be a “living sign of communion” in Christ’s love

Accra, Selikem Norfegali – The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency Archbishop Julien Kabore, has called on Caritas Ghana to deepen its witness as “a living sign of communion,” stressing that the work of the Church’s social arm must remain rooted in Christ and directed at safeguarding human dignity.

In a message delivered at the opening of Caritas Ghana Donors’ Conference in Accra on August 20, Archbishop Kabore conveyed the greetings and Apostolic Blessing of Pope Leo XIV, noting that the Holy Father has placed the renewal of fraternity and the defence of human dignity at the heart of his pontificate.

The Nuncio reminded participants that the Church’s mission of charity is not optional but intrinsic to its identity. Quoting St Paul, he said, “‘Charity never ends’ (1 Cor 13:8). All else will pass away, but the love offered in Christ’s name endures forever.” He emphasised that Caritas is unique because it draws its strength from Christ and is inseparably linked to the mission of the Church.

Archbishop Kabore highlighted the need for Caritas Ghana to move beyond service delivery to being a genuine witness of the Gospel. “Every act of service is an invitation to manifest the joy of the Gospel and to remind our brothers and sisters that they are beloved sons and daughters of God,” he stated. He added that forming and encouraging the laity and benefactors was essential so that the Church’s concern for human dignity could shape Ghana’s social, economic, and political life.

The Nuncio commended Caritas Ghana’s visible witness in education, healthcare, peacebuilding, livelihood support, and care for creation, saying these initiatives embody the words of Christ: “‘I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly’ (Jn 10:10).”

He further cautioned that authentic development must not be reduced to statistics or economic growth alone, insisting that “it is always about human faces and human stories, about ensuring that no one is left behind.”

Collaboration, he said, is not simply efficiency but “a reflection of the very life of God, who is Communion: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”
