The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ho-Ghana, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu,SVD, has urged priests to remain faithful to the true message of the Gospel, warning against the growing temptation to reduce Christian preaching to material gain.
Delivering his homily at this year’s Chrism Mass on March 31, the bishop reminded the clergy of their sacred identity and mission, stating that, “As minsters of Word and Sacrament, we priests are another Christ in the community of the faithful.”
He emphasised that priesthood is rooted in sacrifice and service, not personal ambition. “We are called to be united closely with Christ and endeavour to become more like him,” he said, urging priests to examine their lives and ministry.

In a direct and uncompromising message, Bishop Fianu cautioned against distorting the Gospel message, declaring, “We are not called to preach a prosperity gospel but the good news of Jesus Christ which includes suffering as he experienced it himself.”
He further stressed that authentic Christian teaching must prioritise the spiritual and holistic well being of the faithful over personal gain. “May we learn from him and resolve to imitate him, by teaching the Christian faith without thinking of our own profit, solely for the well being of the people we are sent to serve.”
Drawing from Scripture, the bishop highlighted the Church’s mission to bring hope and transformation, especially to the vulnerable. He noted that the Gospel message is not about wealth but about liberation and joy, saying, “Those who hear this message are not told that they would become rich, but the message is meant to offer them joy.”
Addressing the wider congregation, he called on all believers to share in the Church’s mission. “You are also called to be witnesses to the good news of Jesus Christ in all situations of life.”
