The Ghanaian Catholic community is mourning the sudden death of Rev. Fr. Isaac Amos Abanyie, Records Manager and Archivist at the National Catholic Secretariat, who had also been serving as Acting Executive Secretary of the Department of Strategic Investment since February 2026.
The death was confirmed in a release from the Office of the Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Coast, which reported that Fr. Abanyie collapsed shortly after disembarking from an aircraft in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was rushed to the Aarwyp Trauma Hospital, where he passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
A priest of the Archdiocese of Cape Coast, Fr. Abanyie was entrusted with overseeing the digitisation of records of permanent value within the Secretariat and across Archdioceses and Dioceses nationwide. In his dual roles, he contributed significantly to the preservation of the Church’s institutional memory and the management of its strategic administrative functions.

The Archdiocese has called on all priests, religious, and lay faithful to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for comfort for his family, siblings, aunties, and uncles. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Fr. Abanyie’s passing is a profound loss to the Catholic Secretariat and the wider Church in Ghana, particularly in the areas of archival preservation, records management, and administrative leadership.
