Rev. Fr. Samuel Perry Abotsi, CSsR, the second Redemptorist priest from St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Ho Dome, has celebrated his First Thanksgiving Mass following his ordination into the ministerial priesthood. The solemn and spirit-filled celebration took place on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at his home parish, marking a significant milestone in his journey of faith and service.

Fr. Abotsi was ordained by the Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ho and Vice President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, during a grand ordination ceremony at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Ho Kpevele.

His ordination, along with that of Rev. Fr. David Akpatsou Agbegnigan, added to the growing number of young men responding to the call to the priesthood in the Diocese.

In the homily during the Thanksgiving Mass, Rev. Fr. Kenneth Debre, Parish Priest of Holy Rosary Parish reminded Fr. Abotsi and the congregation that, “Being a priest is not about you, but about God.”

He emphasized the importance of compassion, attentiveness, and spiritual presence in the life of every priest.

“God will give you attention whenever you call on Him, but as a priest, you must also listen to everyone who comes to you,”

He said the priestly title of ‘Father’ is a serious and sacred responsibility, urging Fr. Abotsi to be present, caring, and joyful in his ministry.

Fr. Debre also called on the faithful to continually support their priests through prayer, understanding, and encouragement. “The Catholic Church has survived because of the sacrifices and dedication of her priests. Let us care for our priests, for they are vessels of grace in our midst.”

He advised priests to build strong and meaningful friendships and to remain grounded in their personal integrity and identity, stating, “Be a man of your own, do not fight battles that are not yours to fight.”

Rev. Fr. Samuel Perry Abotsi now becomes the second son of St. Cecilia Parish to be ordained into the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), a missionary religious congregation known for preaching the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned.

The celebration drew hundreds of parishioners, religious, friends, and family members, all of whom gathered to thank God for the gift of Fr. Abotsi’s life and vocation. The joyous occasion was marked with music, dancing, and a deep spirit of communal thanksgiving.

Saturday of the Fourteenth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Isaiah 6,1-8.

In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord... seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple.
Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft.
"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!" they cried one to the other. "All the earth is filled with his glory!"
At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.
Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
He touched my mouth with it. "See," he said, "now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged."
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," I said; "send me!"

Psalms 93(92),1ab.1c-2.5.

The LORD is king, in splendor robed;
robed... is the LORD and girt about with strength.

And he has made the world firm,
your throne stands firm from of old;
from everlasting you are, O LORD.

Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed:
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, for length of days.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 10,24-33.

Jesus said to his Apostles: “No disciple... is above his teacher, no slave above his master.
It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household!
Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.
What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge.
Even all the hairs of your head are counted.
So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father."
