The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has assured Pope Leo XIV of the prayers and solidarity of the Church in Africa following his surgery, asking God to grant him a full and speedy recovery.
In a message dated October 12, 2026, SECAM President Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa, said the news had raised concern among the faithful across the continent but expressed confidence in God’s providence.
“The news has naturally caused concern among the faithful across our continent. Yet, with hope and trust in God’s providence, we pray that the Lord, for You.”
Cardinal Ambongo, writing on behalf of SECAM and the People of God throughout Africa and its islands, assured the Pope of their continued prayers and filial affection.
He entrusted the Holy Father to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying for his recovery and the strength to continue his ministry as leader of the Catholic Church.
“May she accompany You through the operation and recovery, and obtain for You renewed strength, good health, and a full and speedy recovery, so that You may continue Your Petrine ministry in the service of the universal Church,” the message said.
The SECAM president also called on bishops, priests, consecrated persons and lay faithful across Africa and its islands to unite in prayer for the Pope.
“May our Eucharistic celebrations, personal prayers, and ecclesial communities express our communion with You,” he said.
Cardinal Ambongo said the moment should renew the Church in Africa’s love for the Successor of Peter and its commitment to praying for his ministry.
