Pope Leo XIV spent a calm first night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Holy See Press Office has announced.
“The night passed calmly for the Pope. Further information will be provided later today,” the Press Office said on Wednesday morning, 14 October, in its first update following the operation.
The Pope underwent surgery on Tuesday, 13 October, in a procedure that lasted approximately 90 minutes. He was in the operating theatre for about three hours.
A medical statement issued after the operation confirmed that tissue examined during surgery revealed lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer that had been suspected from pre-operative tests.
The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung using a video-assisted technique. The operation was described as successful, with no complications reported.
Following surgery, Pope Leo awoke normally and returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor after a brief period of observation.
The Vatican has said that further information on the Pope’s condition would be provided later on Wednesday. He is expected to remain in hospital for about a week as he recovers.
