Accra, Selikem Norfegali – The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Archbishop Julian Kabore, and Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Hon. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, are expected to headline this year’s celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Chaplaincy, University of Ghana, Legon.

The event, which will be held under the theme “Blessed are those who have not lost hope” – Sirach 14-2, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Organised by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), Legon Conference, in collaboration with the Chaplaincy, the celebration aims to honour the wisdom, faith, and enduring contributions of the elderly in Church and society.

The presence of Archbishop Kabore, the Pope’s representative in Ghana, is expected to underscore the Church’s global call to cherish and protect the aged as “a treasure of humanity,” as often emphasized by the late Pope Francis.

In line with the celebration, Pope Leo XIV has issued a message of hope to the elderly.

At the beginning of his message, the Holy Father evoked the Jubilee Year to remind the faithful that “hope is a constant source of joy, whatever our age.”

He cited some elderly biblical figures, such as Abraham and Sarah, Moses, and Zechariah, whom the Lord surprised in “an act of saving power”: “God repeatedly demonstrates his providential care by turning to people in their later years,” he explained.

The pontiff noted that by making these choices, “God thus teaches us that, in his eyes, old age is a time of blessing and grace, and that the elderly are, for him, the first witnesses of hope.”

He then emphasized that the increasing number of elderly people “is a sign of the times that we are called to discern, in order to properly interpret this moment of history.”

The Holy Father noted that “embracing the elderly helps us to understand that life is more than just the present moment, and should not be wasted in superficial encounters and fleeting relationships. Instead, life is constantly pointing us toward the future.”

He also emphasized that “if it is true that the weakness of the elderly needs the strength of the young, it is equally true that the inexperience of the young needs the witness of the elderly in order to build the future with wisdom.”

The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was instituted by Pope Francis in 2021 and is celebrated every fourth Sunday of July, close to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. The Day is intended to affirm the vital role of grandparents and older persons in passing on the faith and building up the Church.

Book of Hosea 11,1-4.8c-9.

Thus says the LORD: When Israel was a child... I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son.
The more I called them, the farther they went from me, sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms;
I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks; Yet, though I stooped to feed my child, they did not know that I was their healer.
My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred.
I will not give vent to my blazing anger, I will not destroy Ephraim again; For I am God and not man, the Holy One present among you; I will not let the flames consume you.

Psalms 80(79),2ac.3b.15-16.

O shepherd of Israel, hearken.
from... your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power.

Once again, O LORD of hosts,
look down from heaven, and see:
take care of this vine,
and protect what your right hand has planted
the son of man whom you yourself made strong.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 10,7-15.

Jesus said to his Apostles: “As you go, make... this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give."
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you."
Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words--go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town."
