Accra-Ghana,  – Twelve newly ordained priests who received Holy Orders on Saturday, July 26, in the Archdiocese of Accra, Ghana, have described the priesthood as a divine gift, calling it an invitation to participate in the mission of Christ through service and love.

Speaking on behalf of his brother priests during the vote of thanks at the ordination ceremony held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Odorkor, Rev. Fr. Frederick Asante Owusu said “The priesthood is indeed a gift from God to us to participate in Christ’s mission of service and love.”

The ordination Mass, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., saw the elevation of twelve men to the sacred priesthood—seven for the Archdiocese of Accra and five for religious congregations.

The newly ordained are Rev. Frs. Issac Kofi Dunyoh, Toussaint Nianza Wadia, Peter Oppong-Ampofo, Victor Yaw Ampim, Frederick Asante Owusu, Roland Kwupoli Kajelo, and Michael Owusu-Amponsah for the Archdiocese of Accra; Friars Emmanuel Sor and Aaron Melchizedek for the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans); Don Nicodemus Besigrinee, SDB and Don Stephen Mensah Teye, SDB for the Salesians of Don Bosco; and Fr. Thomas Edem Djabaku, SJ for the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

Fr. Owusu noted that the journey to priesthood was not simply a result of academic preparation or human effort, but of divine encounter.

“This sacred calling is not merely the result of a long year of preparation but a profound encounter with God’s grace, which has guided us to this moment,” he said.

They expressed deep gratitude to Archbishop Kwofie for conferring upon them the grace of the priesthood and for his pastoral guidance throughout the formation process.
“Your Grace, your presence and guidance has greatly contributed to the success of this day,” Fr. Owusu noted, extending similar appreciation to Auxiliary Bishops, Most Rev. John Kobina Louis and Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare for their “ministry of presence and prayerful support.”

The new priests also acknowledged the significant role played by vocation directors whose support and guidance they said, were instrumental in their discernment journey.

The newly ordained pledged to serve the Church with dedication and humility.
“We reaffirm our commitment to serve the Church and her people wholeheartedly. Let us therefore support one another in faith and service, striving together to live out the Gospel in our daily lives,” Fr. Owusu concluded.

Saturday of the Second week in Ordinary Time

2nd book of Samuel 1,1-4.11-12.19.23-27.

David returned from his defeat of the Amalekites  and... spent two days in Ziklag.
On the third day a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. Going to David, he fell to the ground in homage.
David asked him, "Where do you come from?" He replied, "I have escaped from the Israelite camp."
"Tell me what happened," David bade him. He answered that the soldiers had fled the battle and that many of them had fallen and were dead, among them Saul and his son Jonathan.
David seized his garments and rent them, and all the men who were with him did likewise.
They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the soldiers of the LORD of the clans of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
"Alas! the glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights; how can the warriors have fallen!
Saul and Jonathan, beloved and cherished, separated neither in life nor in death, swifter than eagles, stronger than lions!
Women of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and in finery, who decked your attire with ornaments of gold.
"How can the warriors have fallen-- in the thick of the battle, slain upon your heights!
"I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother! most dear have you been to me; More precious have I held love for you than love for women.
"How can the warriors have fallen, the weapons of war have perished!"

Psalms 80(79),2-3.5-7.

Shepherd of Israel, listen!
From your... throne upon the cherubim, shine forth
Rouse your power,
come to save us.
LORD of hosts, how long will you burn with anger
while your people pray?

You have fed them the bread of tears,
made them drink tears in abundance.
You have left us to be fought over by our neighbors;
our enemies deride us.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 3,20-21.

Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again... the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat.
When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, "He is out of his mind."
