The Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) has announced the cancellation of the ‘Days in the Diocese’ component of the West Africa Youth Days (WAYD) Accra 2026, following directives from the Regional Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA).

In a February 5 2026  statement addressed to chaplains, diocesan youth councils and movement executives, GHANCYC explained that the decision was taken after regional consultations.

“Following further consultations and official directives from the Regional Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA), we wish to formally inform you that the ‘Days in the Diocese’ component of the West Africa Youth Days has been cancelled,” the statement said.

The youth council noted that the decision was not taken lightly, stressing its pastoral motivation and wider organisational considerations. “This decision was taken at the regional level by RECOWA in a broader and pastoral best interest of the overall organisation and smooth execution of the programme,” the statement added.

Acknowledging the efforts already made by host dioceses, GHANCYC recognised the disappointment the change may cause. “We are deeply aware that this adjustment may bring some disappointment., especialy in view of the time, energy and resources already invested by our host Archdioceses and Dioceses,” the council stated, adding that, “Your sacrifices and commitment are deeply appreciated as a true sign of our shared Church nmission in service to the youth.”

Despite the cancellation, the core celebration of WAYD remains firmly on course. GHANCYC confirmed that “the West Africa Youth Days shall now be held from 7th to 11th September 2026 in Accra, where all the main spiritual, pastoral, and celebratory activities will take place.”

The council also expressed gratitude to dioceses that had prepared to host young people during the diocesan days. “We express our sincerest gratitude to all host Archdioceses and Dioceses for the loving preparations made, the hospitality planned, and the spirit of readiness demonstrated,” the statement read. It further affirmed that, “Your generous hospitality. sacrifices, and readiness to serve the youth of West Africa are deeply appreciated and remain a strong testimony to our shared ecclesial mission.”

As preparations continue towards the continental youth gathering, GHANCYC appealed for sustained spiritual support. “As we move forward, we humbly ask for your continued prayers, encouragement, and support, as we move into the next phase of preparations for this historic gathering,” the statement said, entrusting the process to divine guidance and Marian intercession.

The West Africa Youth Days Accra 2026 is expected to draw Catholic youth from across the sub-region for days of prayer, formation and celebration centred in Ghana’s capital.
