Former Secretary of the Commission for Information at the Synod on Synodality and an IMBISA delegate to the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) first preparatory assembly towards the 2028 Ecclesial Assembly, Sheila Pires, has called on the Church in Africa to harness digital and social media to deepen understanding and promote synodality across the continent.

Speaking on the sidelines of the assembly in Ethiopia, Pires said digital platforms offer the Church an important avenue to educate bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful about synodality as the Church journeys towards the 2028 Ecclesial Assembly in Rome.

“As we journey towards the Ecclesial Assembly of the Synod on Synodality in 2028, I’d like to highlight the role of digital media, I’d like to highlight the role of social media in promoting synodality, in educating the Church, as in all of us, religious, laity, bishops, clergy, about synodality,” she said.

She noted that the African Church had already made progress in using digital platforms to communicate about synodality, pointing to the growing number of podcasts and other digital programmes dedicated to the subject.

“I believe that the digital space is one way of evangelising and the Church in Africa has made great strides in doing this,” Pires said.

“We have in some parts of Africa where there are series, there are podcasts being created all about synodality.”

She encouraged Catholic communicators and Church institutions across the continent to build on these initiatives and continue using digital spaces to accompany the Church’s synodal journey.

Her call comes as African bishops and other representatives prepare for the next stages of the continental process leading to the 2028 Ecclesial Assembly in Rome.

She said digital communication should not simply be viewed as a means of disseminating information, but as a tool for evangelisation and formation, helping Catholics understand what synodality means and how it should shape the life of the Church.

“My call is that we continue to use these spaces to promote synodality as we journey towards the Ecclesial Assembly,” she said.

However, Pires stressed that digital engagement must be accompanied by a deeper transformation in the way Catholics understand their participation in the Church.

She emphasised that synodality cannot be reduced to Church programmes, meetings or communication strategies, but requires the participation and shared responsibility of the entire Church.

“At the same time, also to remember that synodality is about all of us,” she said. “Synodality is about co-responsibility.”

For Pires, genuine co-responsibility requires a change in attitude and a renewed understanding of what it means to be Church.

“And for co-responsibility to exist it means that we have to have a conversion of spirit, a conversion of how we are Church,” she said.

First Letter to the Corinthians 4,6b-15.

Brothers and sisters: Learn from myself and... Apollos not to go beyond what is written, so that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over against another.
Who confers distinction upon you? What do you possess that you have not received? But if you have received it, why are you boasting as if you did not receive it?
You are already satisfied; you have already grown rich; you have become kings without us! Indeed, I wish that you had become kings, so that we also might become kings with you.
For as I see it, God has exhibited us apostles as the last of all, like people sentenced to death, since we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and human beings alike.
We are fools on Christ's account, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are held in honor, but we in disrepute.
To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clad and roughly treated, we wander about homeless
and we toil, working with our own hands. When ridiculed, we bless; when persecuted, we endure;
when slandered, we respond gently. We have become like the world's rubbish, the scum of all, to this very moment.
I am writing you this not to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.
Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Psalms 145(144),17-18.19-20.21.

The LORD is just in all his ways
and... holy in all his works.
The LORD is near to all who call upon him,
to all who call upon him in truth.

He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
The LORD, keeps all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

May my mouth speak the praise of the LORD,
and may all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 6,1-5.

While Jesus was going through a field of grain... on a sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
Some Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?"
Jesus said to them in reply, "Have you not read what David did when he and those (who were) with him were hungry?
(How) he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions."
Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."
