Thousands of Catholic faithful from across the Catholic Diocese of Enugu converged on the Ugwogo-Nike Marian Shrine on Saturday, August 15, 2026, to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The annual pilgrimage brought together parish groups in colourful processions, with Marian statues, flowers, hymns and prayers filling the shrine grounds as the faithful gathered for the celebration.

For many pilgrims, the spiritual preparation began with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, with priests available to hear confessions ahead of the Eucharistic celebration.

The pilgrimage offered the faithful an opportunity to honour Mary, the Mother of God and Mother of the Church, while presenting their personal and family intentions before God through her intercession.

The Dean of Ugwogo-Nike Deanery, Rev. Fr. Stan Zeowa, welcomed the Bishop, priests and pilgrims to the shrine and expressed gratitude for the large turnout.

He described the gathering as a visible sign of the enduring Marian devotion of Catholics in the Diocese of Enugu and the growing importance of Ugwogo-Nike as a centre of pilgrimage and prayer.

In his remarks, the Bishop thanked the Dean and the Director of the Pilgrimage Centre, Very Rev. Fr. Desmond Ebulue, CSsR, for their efforts in preparing the pilgrimage grounds and improving access to the shrine.

He also acknowledged contributions towards the construction and improvement of roads leading to the pilgrimage centre, including support associated with the office of the Senate President.

The Bishop further appreciated the Enugu State Government for providing buses to transport pilgrims from different parishes, noting the role played by Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke in facilitating the transportation support.

The Bishop described the 2026 celebration as particularly significant because the Solemnity of the Assumption fell on Saturday, August 15, the actual feast day.

He encouraged pilgrims to bring their personal struggles, hopes and intentions before God through Mary’s intercession.

Against the backdrop of challenges facing Nigeria, the Bishop called on the faithful to pray especially for peace and security in Nigeria and Enugu State.

He reminded the pilgrims of Mary’s place in Catholic faith as Mother of God, Mother of the Church and Mother of believers.

The central spiritual reflection of the celebration was delivered by Rev. Fr. Charles Igbokwe, who focused his homily on Mary as the New Ark of the Covenant.

Drawing from the Old Testament account of the Ark of the Covenant and its presence in the house of Obed-Edom, Fr. Igbokwe reflected on the significance of Mary’s role in salvation history.

The Ark of the Covenant was associated with God’s presence among His people. Mary, he explained, carried Jesus Christ, God made man, in her womb.

The priest therefore encouraged the faithful to see Mary not merely as someone to admire, but as the woman who points believers towards Christ.

He connected the mystery of the Assumption with Mary’s life of humility, obedience and service.

Reflecting on Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, Fr. Igbokwe noted that despite carrying the Son of God, Mary went out to serve another person.

He encouraged Catholics to imitate these virtues of humility, charity and service, while also deepening their devotion to Mary and taking the Holy Rosary seriously.

Eucharist at the heart of the pilgrimage

Following the homily, the celebration continued with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, with the reception of Holy Communion marking the spiritual high point of the pilgrimage.

The Eucharistic celebration reminded pilgrims that Marian devotion ultimately leads believers to Christ, whom Mary carried in her womb and continually points to.

At the conclusion of Mass, Very Rev. Fr. Desmond Ebulue offered a vote of thanks to the Bishop, priests, pilgrims, communities and individuals who contributed to the success of the pilgrimage.

Representatives of communities that donated land for the pilgrimage centre, alongside the Laity Council and Nkwo-Nike Deanery, presented kola to the Bishop as a gesture of appreciation and fellowship.

The Bishop also presented an award to a couple in recognition of their significant contribution towards preparations for the pilgrimage.

One of the final highlights was the blessing of the Marian statues brought by the various parish groups.

The Bishop sprinkled holy water over the statues and the congregation, bringing a fitting conclusion to the day of Marian devotion.

The celebration ended with the cutting of the Assumption cake and a departure procession as pilgrims gradually began their journeys home.

For the thousands who gathered at Ugwogo-Nike, the pilgrimage was more than a public celebration.

They came with different stories, challenges, hopes and prayer intentions. They returned home carrying their Marian statues, memories of the celebration and, for many, a renewed sense of spiritual encouragement.

The message of the pilgrimage was ultimately not simply to admire Mary, but to imitate her faith, humility, obedience and willingness to serve.

As pilgrims departed the shrine, the celebration left them with a reminder that the true fruit of a pilgrimage is not only what happens at the shrine, but how the experience transforms the lives of those who return home.

Monday of the Twentieth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Ezekiel 24,15-24.

Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
Son... of man, by a sudden blow I am taking away from you the delight of your eyes, but do not mourn or weep or shed any tears.
Groan in silence, make no lament for the dead, bind on your turban, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, and do not eat the customary bread.
That evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I had been commanded.
Then the people asked me, "Will you not tell us what all these things that you are doing mean for us?" I therefore spoke to the people that morning,
saying to them: Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
Say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: I will now desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of your pride, the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul. The sons and daughters you left behind shall fall by the sword.
You shall do as I have done, not covering your beards nor eating the customary bread.
Your turbans shall remain on your heads, your sandals on your feet. You shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away because of your sins and groan one to another.
Ezekiel shall be a sign for you: all that he did you shall do when it happens. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD.

Book of Deuteronomy 32,18-19.20.21.

You were unmindful of the Rock that begot... you,
you forgot the God who gave you birth.
When the LORD saw this, he was filled with loathing
and anger toward his sons and daughters.
"I will hide my face from them," he said,
"and see what will then become of them.
What a fickle race they are,
sons with no loyalty in them!"
"Since they have provoked me with their 'no-god'
and angered me with their vain idols,
I will provoke them with a 'no-people';
with a foolish nation I will anger them."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 19,16-22.

A young man approached Jesus and said, "Teacher, what... good must I do to gain eternal life?"
He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
He asked him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, " 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother'; and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?"
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
