Virtual Mass cannot replace Sunday Eucharist – Pope Leo

Pope Leo XIV has urged Catholics to make participation in Sunday Mass a priority, stressing that joining a virtual celebration cannot replace being physically present at the Eucharistic celebration.

Addressing the faithful during his general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, August 12, the Pope said Sunday is fundamentally the Lord’s Day and that celebrating the Eucharist is essential to its proper observance.

“To sanctify Sunday, it is essential to celebrate the Eucharist,” Pope Leo XIV said. “This assembly cannot be substituted by a solely virtual presence, nor can it be reduced to a merely passive gathering.”

The Pope made the remarks as he continued his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium.

He emphasised that the liturgical assembly is not simply a gathering of individuals watching or listening to a celebration, but an active participation of the faithful in the Eucharistic celebration.

“The liturgical assembly is in fact fulfilled through the active participation of brothers and sisters,” he said.

Pope Leo also called on communities and employers to help make Sunday Mass accessible to Catholics whose work schedules make regular participation difficult.

“I urge everyone to seek the best possible conditions so that even those who are unable to take time off work on Sundays may take part in holy Mass,” he said.

The Pope explained that the Church has traditionally marked Sunday as the “dies Domini”, or “the Lord’s Day”, in celebration of Christ’s resurrection.

He connected the celebration of Sunday with the Church’s understanding of the liturgical year, which he said is not simply a remembrance of events from the past but a continuing encounter with Christ’s work of salvation.

Drawing on the teaching of Venerable Pope Pius XII, Leo said the liturgical year makes present Christ’s continuing action in the life of the Church.

“As she journeys through this temporal cycle, the Church remains in contact with the Lord’s redemptive action, so that all the faithful may be filled with his grace,” he said.

Pope Leo also renewed his prayers for victims of the recent earthquake in Colombia, assuring affected families of his spiritual closeness and expressing gratitude to those involved in rescue and relief efforts.
