The announcement by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference designating September 1 for nationwide Holy Masses to mark the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is worth reflecting. In the Genesis account, God did not merely construct the universe; He spoke it into existence (Genesis1:1-27). His breath shaped the cosmos, and His voice commanded life to rise from the chaos.
Yet, the divine narrative of creation does not stop in Genesis. This message stands at the very heart of scriptural teaching and spills directly into the beating heart of the natural world. Every living creature is, in a very literal and wonderful way, a word spoken by God.
To understand humanity and nature as the living word of God, we look to the foundational truths of scripture. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that scripture is divinely inspired, literally “breathed out” by God. In Genesis, God breathed the breath of life into humanity, and every living creature pulses with that same divine breath. When we pollute our rivers, clear our forests illegally for galamsey, or push endangered species to the brink of extinction, we are not just damaging resources on a balance sheet. We are actively silencing parts of God’s living vocabulary.
Again, scripture describes the word of God as “alive and active” (Hebrews 4:12). Living creatures mirror this exact dynamic. We wake up, we move, we breathe, and we navigate the rhythm of existence. We are tangible proof of an active, moving word.
To add, the word of God gives life (John 6:63). In Ghana, our forests provide rainfall for our farmers, our wetlands filter our water, and our ecosystems sustain our daily bread. Nature gives life because it mirrors the life-giving nature of its Creator.
When a forest is degraded or a river poisoned, the active vitality of God’s creation is stifled. Silencing the environment is, in a very real sense, shouting down the voice of God in the physical world.
When we view ourselves and our fellow creatures not merely as biological accidents, but as living syllables of a divine sentence, everything changes. Environmental stewardship shifts from a matter of policy to an act of sacred worship. To cherish nature, protect our ecosystems, and honor human dignity is to honor the very mouth from which we proceeded.
As the nation gathers for this momentous nationwide Mass, let us look upon one another and upon every breathing creature in the forests, fields, and waters of Ghana with a fresh sense of reverence. We are walking and breathing testaments to a God who still speaks today.
